Position Announcement Utah Valley University is in search of a Senior Director in Accounting! Working under the direction of the Controller of Business Services, the Senior Director - Accounting will be primarily responsible for the general accounting processes and financial reporting for the entire University; manage the accountants who are responsible for Grants & Contracts, Auxiliaries, Treasury Services, and Fixed Assets; prepare or review all required tax forms; work with departments to ensure proper systems and processes for financial reporting and internal controls; and direct the University’s financial close processes including the annual financial statement preparation and audit management; be the resident GASB expert to ensure proper accounting and implementing new standards; prepare financial statements and manage the audit of the UVU Foundation.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Prepare year-end financial statements for the University and UVU Foundation. Coordinate annual audits of the University and UVU Foundation, act as a liaison between auditors and the Entities, and review and provide requested information. Evaluate audit recommendations and implement changes as appropriate. Write notes to the Financial Statement detailing the financial condition of the Entities for the annual Financial Reports. Study current accounting, tax and auditing publications and pronouncements to keep up with changes in presentation and procedures. Direct the compilation, design, presentation, and printing of the annual Financial Reports.
  • Oversee/prepare monthly auxiliary financial statements in a timely efficient manner. Coordinate preparation of financial reports to ensure timely release and help recipients understand their financial position. Track trends and ratios to ensure auxiliaries are profitable.
  • Analyze various accounts to determine trends and appropriate expenditures. Review reports and statements prepared by other accountants before distribution. Review and approve journal entries to ensure proper accounting. Work on special projects as assigned.
  • Coordinate the responsibilities of subordinate employees to ensure efficiency and effective internal controls to provide reasonable assurance that University assets are protected. Determine what reconciliations are to be done to ensure general ledger balances are correct. Reconcile various accounts that feed into Banner Finance, such as payroll, and reconcile the transactions between the University and Foundation. Reconcile payroll liability accounts. Review tax and compliance issues.
  • Develop procedures and controls to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger. Develop college policies to assure transactions are in accordance with federal and state statutes.
  • Work with the Foundation’s accountant in matters of accounting and financial reporting as needed.
  • Review the University’s Unrelated Business Income Tax return with appropriate schedules and documents.

Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in a directly related field, plus four years of experience related to the Summary of Duties of the position or Bachelor’s degree in a directly related field, plus six years related to the Summary of Duties of the position or any combination of higher education and/or experience totaling ten years.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Accounting or a related field.

  • Knowledge of accounting principles (e.g., Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) to ensure accuracy of financial statements and proficiency in understanding and implementing GASB Standards.
  • Knowledge of understanding how to Implement adequate internal controls to safeguard University assets.
  • Knowledge of computer software programs (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, Banner, SQL, Access) to facilitate accounting operations.
