Assistant Controller

The BYU Marriott Assistant Controller provides detailed accounting services for BYU Marriott and financial training and support for department-level controllers throughout the college. This person will contribute to the college vision and mission of developing Christlike leaders. The person performs complex accounting work to solve diverse and difficult problems and is responsible for day-to-day monitoring of college accounting systems. This individual reports to the Assistant Dean of Finance and represents the Assistant Dean / College Controller and the dean’s office in their interactions with department leaders, faculty, staff, and students.

Essential Functions

  • Accounting
    • Perform internal audits of all departments within the college.
    • Monitor internal controls and processes and makes improvements as needed to maintain the most effective internal control environment.
    • Act as the liaison for college departments with university financial services, vendors, and auditors as needed.
    • Resolves interdepartmental accounting issues.
    • Manage and perform the month- and year-end closing and audit process college wide.
    • Review, edit and process all journal entries and budget adjustments college wide.
    • Reconcile balance sheets college wide.
    • Prepare, review, and submit contracts with vendors and independent contractors.
    • Maintain changes in operating units and class codes.
    • Manage capital equipment accounts.
  • Financial Analysis and Reporting
    • Provide financial analysis and forecasting for management and departments; assist with budget development.
    • Monitor and analyze monthly budget reports, check for accuracy, resolve issues, and meet with College Controller to review results and plan.
    • Provide monthly and annual analytic reports for college and department leadership teams.
    • Create and prepare standard dashboards as required for analyzing data.
    • Prepare and present ad hoc financial reports and data visualization.
    • Analyze transactions and require justification as needed at the department, college, and university levels to ensure proper accounting for expenditures and receipts.
    • Prepare for annual resource planning including Experiential Learning and Visiting Scholar procedures and reporting.
    • Create reports for BYU Marriott annual report, magazine surveys, and other financial users.
  • Training & Compliance
    • Provide direction, training, and support for closing accounts and year-end audit activities with department controllers.
    • Promote the wise and proper use of university and college assets and resources.
    • Exercise judgment regarding accounts, procedures, and system maintenance; monitor and approve transactions.
    • Monitor monthly compliance list and work with departments to implement processes and controls to improve compliance with university policies and procedures.
    • Assist department controllers with purchasing needs and difficult/unique situations.
    • Supervise, hire, and train student financial employee(s).

Minimum education/experience required:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, information systems, business, or related field, with 5+ years of accounting/bookkeeping experience or comparable combination.

Preferred: MAcc and 6+ years professional experience. CPA, CMA, or CIA certification.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications (please indicate whether (required“ or “preferred”):

Required:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles, systems, and reports.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel spreadsheet skills (pivot tables, v-lookups, etc.); proficiency in other MS Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • High-level organization and time management skills; excellent attention to detail.
  • Mature judgment and tact in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently under general direction from dean.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of people across multiple levels of the organization.
  • Ability to train and manage student employees.
  • Ability to explain financial transactions, systems, policies, and procedures to users with varying degrees of financial expertise.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preferred:
    • Familiarity and/or expertise with databases and data reporting, including Tableau and/or similar data visualization tools.
    • Good understanding of and commitment to the mission and aims of BYU and BYU Marriott.
    • Knowledge of BYU or other higher education policies and procedures a plus.
    • Understanding of BYU, state, and federal policies, regulations, and restrictions as related to position.
    • Interest in and commitment to proactive research on and development of improvement to systems, procedures, and processes.
