With emphasis on current issues, planning, and strategy, attend this webinar to learn how to avoid penalties, how to use IRS “Frequently Asked Questions” to answer tough questions relating to new laws, how to plan for all of the taxes a client may be subject to (regular tax, alternative minimum tax, self-employment tax and net investment income tax), and a lot more. Congress has become especially interested in improving compliance with the law and using preparers to enforce that compliance.

Description:
With emphasis on current issues, planning, and strategy, attend this webinar to learn how to avoid penalties, how to use IRS “Frequently Asked Questions” to answer tough questions relating to new laws, how to plan for all of the taxes a client may be subject to (regular tax, alternative minimum tax, self-employment tax and net investment income tax), and a lot more. Congress has become especially interested in improving compliance with the law and using preparers to enforce that compliance.
Specific topics include:
- Items included in the 2015 extender bill set to expire at the end of 2016 (and why this time it may really be the client’s last chance to use some or most of these items)
- The revised due dates for many types of entity tax returns
- Getting business clients prepared for the requirements to provide W-2s to the government by January 31, 2017
- The major reforms made to partnership examinations that affect all partnerships and IRS guidance on electing to apply these rules to 2016 returns
- Requirements to receive a Form 1098-T in order to claim educational tax breaks
- Additional information being reported on Forms 1098 for mortgages
- New compliance rules preparers must implement (or be subject to per return penalties) for clients claiming the child tax credit and American Opportunity Tax Credit
Objectives
- New Tax Law — monitoring changes and phase-in
- New Treasury Regulations, Revenue Procedures, Revenue Rulings, Notices, etc.
- Letter Rulings and Technical Advice Memoranda of interest to your clients
- Court decisions that affect “average” taxpayers
- IRS Initiatives, Audit Technique Guides, Office of Professional Responsibility, and other targeted programs
